Pilates
Pilates, developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1920s, is a very precise and controlled exercise system that focuses on quality not quantity and about getting “the perfect rep”. In fact it was originally called Contrology as Joseph Pilates strongly believed that you can use the mind to control the body. Pilates requires total concentration, as you breathe to enhance the effectiveness of the movements and focuses on bone rhythm as well as muscle activation. Joseph Pilates liked to quote Schiller: “It is the mind itself which builds the body”. Others have called Pilates “the thinking person’s exercise system”, because you learn how your body works and what you need to do to keep yourself healthy.
We offer matwork as well as full equipment sessions using the reformer, Cadillac, chairs and barrels. The great thing about the pilates machines is that you can train with “progressive resistance” meaning the resistance increases as the spring is stretched. It is great for strengthening those smaller stabilizer muscles which can be difficult to do with just matwork. Whether using the additional resistance of springs on Pilates machines, or the constant resistance of gravity in mat work, the Pilates repertoire will build your strength, develop proper alignment and posture, and will increase your flexibility and motor control. I have to say the machines are a lot of fun!
